Fishing nets that are lost or discarded at sea are one of major marine polluters and a source of harm for marine wildlife that gets entangled in them. Recent technological developments on biodegradable fishing nets offer a glimpse of hope, however, such nets are not yet used globally. Sustainable fishing gear certificates, combined with technological developments to reduce net loss of fishing nets and boost their recovery from the ocean, and a network to promote research and spread of the relevant technologies, could support the use of biodegradable fishing nets and contribute to the advancement of SDG 14 (life below water).
